Facial Excema

We started breeding a line of suffolks in 2021 for tolerance to Facial Excema.

We had the opportunity to purchase Suffolk ewes from Breeder Gordon Levet from Wellsford when he dispersed his stud flocks. Our thinking behind this was that although he had not tested his suffolks for FE tolerance, the sheep must have been exposed to FE at some stage and survived.

While breeding terminals for FE tolerance is relatively new, (a lot has been done in maternal breeds) it is a slow process, which we will work away quietly on. The testing we have done to date has shown us some bloodlines had higher tolerance than others, so we will retain those bloodlines in the “FE program”. Each year we will use the ram lambs as sires that have the best results from testing, which we are doing in January each year.
