Bellfield Southdowns

Bellfield Southdown stud was started in 1952 By DE Maclean, in Omakau, Central Otago. In 1997 the flock transferred ownership to DM Maclean, In 2018 Charles and Emma took over managing the stud while it continues to be owned by the Maclean family.

In 2023 135 stud ewes will be mated. Recently we have added ewes to increase the size of the stud to give us a bigger base to select from, these genetics are predominately from Clifton Downs bloodines.
Bellfield Southdowns are full of meat, with constitution, bone and structural soundness.

The Southdowns are fully SIL recorded and data is available on all our sale rams. We aim to achieve the correct balance of phenotype with the data to support the sheep, there is no point in having all the figures in the world if the sheep can’t do the job required.

With these attributes we will be able to provide Rams to commercial farmers that breed fast growing high yielding terminal lambs that weigh, that are born easily, and the rams stay sound and last.

We use DNA technology through Lincoln University to get “Footscores” on our Southdowns. These are available to clients to give them an insight into rams and the bloodines genetic resistance to footrot.
